An empirical algorithm to map perennial firn aquifers and ice slabs within the Greenland Ice Sheet using satellite L-band microwave radiometry

چکیده
Abstract. Perennial firn aquifers are subsurface meltwater reservoirs consisting of a meters-thick water-saturated layer that can form on spatial scales as large tens kilometers. They have been observed within the percolation facies glaciated regions experiencing intense seasonal surface melting and high snow accumulation. Widespread perennial identified Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) via field expeditions, airborne ice-penetrating radar surveys, satellite microwave sensors. In contrast, ice slabs nearly continuous layers also kilometers result sequentially refreezing following multiple seasons. but in areas where accumulation is at least 25 % lower compared to aquifer areas. recently GrIS expeditions specifically typically do not form. However, yet be from space. Together, these two sheet features represent distinct, related, sub-facies broader defined primarily by differences accumulation, which influences englacial hydrology thermal characteristics depth. Here, for first time, we use enhanced-resolution vertically polarized L-band brightness temperature (TVB) imagery (2015–2019) generated using observations collected over NASA's Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) map slab together hydrological system. We an empirical algorithm previously developed extent Greenland's fitting exponentially decreasing temporal signatures set sigmoidal curves. This recalibrated surveys Operation IceBridge (OIB) campaigns (2010–2017). Our SMAP-derived maps show between 2015 2019, extended 64 000 km2, 76 km2. Combined together, equivalent 24 GrIS. As climate continues warm, will increase extent, intensity, duration. Quantifying possible rapid expansion radiometry has significant implications understanding ice-sheet-wide variability may drive meltwater-induced hydrofracturing accelerated flow well high-elevation runoff impact mass balance stability

متن کاملGlobal Warming and the Greenland Ice Sheet
The Greenland coastal temperatures have followed the early 20th century global warming trend. Since 1940, however, the Greenland coastal stations data have undergone predominantly a cooling trend. At the summit of the Greenland ice sheet the summer average temperature has decreased at the rate of 2.2 ◦C per decade since the beginning of the measurements in 1987. This suggests that the Greenland...
متن کاملDark ice dynamics of the south-west Greenland Ice Sheet
Runoff from the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) has increased in recent years due largely to changes in atmospheric circulation and atmospheric warming. Albedo reductions resulting from these changes have amplified surface melting. Some of the largest declines in GrIS albedo have occurred in the ablation zone of the south-west sector and are associated with the development of “dark” ice surfaces. Fi...
متن کاملMicrobial abundance in surface ice on the Greenland Ice Sheet
Measuring microbial abundance in glacier ice and identifying its controls is essential for a better understanding and quantification of biogeochemical processes in glacial ecosystems. However, cell enumeration of glacier ice samples is challenging due to typically low cell numbers and the presence of interfering mineral particles. We quantified for the first time the abundance of microbial cell...
متن کاملGeoradar-derived estimates of firn density in the percolation zone, western Greenland ice sheet
[1] Greater understanding of variations in firn densification is needed to distinguish between dynamic and melt-driven elevation changes on the Greenland ice sheet. This is especially true in Greenland’s percolation zone, where firn density profiles are poorly documented because few ice cores are extracted in regions with surface melt. We used georadar to investigate firn density variations wit...
